History of the Tula Arms Plant

Entering the era of great reforms during the reign of Peter the Great, Russia was in need of the development of its own industry.  Imports of metals, articles, powder and especially fire-arms from Europe jeopardized the state sovereignty.  By that time Tula was known for its iron-works and the craftsmanship of Tula gunsmiths.  Small handcraft industry existed side by side with manufactories.

But such organization of production could not satisfy constantly rising requirements of the state and army.  The construction of the Tula Arms Plant (Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod) began on February 15, 1712 under the decree of Peter the Great.  The plant was supplied with progressive for those times equipment - water machines, drilling machines used for the making of barrels, grinders, hammers, machines for outer and inside finish of barrels.  The quality of manufactured arms improved to a considerable extent.  For the first time checking gauges were used in the production of arms parts.  Under the Tsar's decree the weapons produced in Tula were established standards.

In 1720 the plant supplied the Russian Army with 22 thousand reliable, light infantry and dragoon shotguns, flint-lock pistols; in 1749 large-scale production of cold steel (blades, sabers, broadswords, swords) was organized at the plant.

By the end of the 18th century the names of remarkable gunsmiths became well-known, among them Ivan Pushkin, Ivan Lyalin - the creator of double-barrel breech-loading flint-lock shotgun, Ivan Polin - the designer of one of the first models of multi-charge repeating fire-arms.

Reconstructed in the 19th century the plant ranked with the best plants of Europe.  In 1879 the well-known Berdan rifle with an improved sliding bolt as put into production.  A model shop specializing in the development of its own models of different small arms and hunting weapons was set up at the plant.  The output of various products increased (single-barrel and double-barrel rod guns, breech loading guns chambered for center-fire cartridges, smooth-bore and combination guns).  Damascus steel technology developed with the participation of a talented designer Mosin was used in the making of barrels.

The name of Sergei Ivanovich Mosin is inseparably linked with the Imperial Tula Arms Plant at which he worked for about 20 years.  S. I. Mosin had graduated from St. Petersburg Artillery Academy and began to work at the plant in 1875; the production situation proved to be favorable for the development of his creative activity and talent for design.  No other arms plant in Russia could match the Tula Arms Plant in a highly trained personnel and technical base.  Just the armory played an important role in the formation of Mosin  as a designer.  And just here his talent for design and gift for organization displayed in full.

For several years S. I. Mosin was occupied with the design of magazine rifles of various systems.  In 1891, as a result of comparison testing of the system designed by Mosin and the system of the Belgium designer I. Nagan, just the Mosin rifle named "The Three-linear rifle Model 1891" (the 0.375 magazine rifle) by the Russian or, to be more exact, the Tula designer was adopted by the army of Russia.  S. I. Mosin was at the head of the commission engaged in the development of gauges of his rifle.  The Mosin "three-linear" rifle and models designed on its basis faithfully served many generations of he Russian soldiers.

The Tula Arms Plant was the only plant in the world to manufacture a remarkable pattern of small arms - Model 1910 Maxim-type machine gun with complete interchangeability of parts.

In the twenties the plant was manufacturing the Model "R" shotguns, Model NK-8,2 rifled carbine designed by Kochetov; TOZ-1 and TOZ-2 small caliber rifles; TOZ-7, TOZ-8 and TOZ-10 single-loading rifles intended for sport shooting.

In 1927 a design bureau was set up at the plant.  As a result of its work the plant started to produce such models of aircraft machine guns as PV-1 and ShKAS.

In 1939 a talented designer F. V. Tokarev worked ou the SVT-38 self -loading spinning rifle ranking high with Model M1 "Garant" - the best semi-automatic rifle of World War II.

In 1927 - 1939 the ShKAS and UB aircraft machine guns, B-2 cannon and Tokarev SVT-38 self-loading rifle (the most rapid-firing rifle in the years of World War II) were put into production.

In 1941-1945, working under the motto: "Everything for the front, everything for the victory" the Tula gunsmiths were manufacturing the SVT-38/40 sniping rifles, ShVAK aircraft cannon, Nagan revolver and TT pistols.

The post war period was the time of the fruitfull work at the creation of various sporting and hunting firearms.  Such models as the TOZ-25 double-barrel hammerless shotgun, "BM" double-barrel hammer shotgun and small-caliber rifles TOZ-8M, TOZ-12, TOZ-16, TOZ-18 were designed in those years.

At the same time the plant was producing the 7,62 mm Simonov carbine SKS.

In 1965 the plant started manufacturing the TOZ-34 over-and-under double-barrel shotgun designed by N. I. Korovyakov and V. P. Ochnev.

In 1961 - 1982 the Tula Arms Plant received an order for production of the worldwide known Kalashnikov submachine gun (six modifications of that submachine gun were put into production), anti-tank guided missiles as the organic parts of the "Malyutka", "Fagot", "konkurs" complexes; underbarrel grenade launcher "Kostyor".

In 1986 the TOZ-87 auto loading hunting shotgun (automatic reloading is effected by powder gases) was designed by N. V. Bahanin, with mass production being launched.

The plant has covered a long and glorious path.

Joint-stock company "Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod" carefully keeps up its history, follows the glorious age-old traditions and looks ahead with hope.
